The nature of oil paint is imperfect, its viscosity and moldability render it challengeable. Yvonne Abercrombie uses this aesthetic to probe notions around the ‘ideal’ in the human condition.
Our mental and physical states are assessed by social factions, what is acceptable or normal is based on calculable comparisons of one another. In painting where everything is conceivable; Yvonne discloses fallibility of human nature through abstract figurative narratives. Although there are hints referencing traditions in figurative painting, Yvonne’s methods distract from its common use. Purposefully contending colour relationships, push and pull of thick and thin texture; the work has become void of literalism and imbued in vivacious content.
Yvonne’s painting process is a tangible way of disabling the minds preoccupation with anxiety, fear, insecurity and disempowerment. Her works, immanent of the female condition, are a reclamation of identity and the pursuit of one’s self-contentment.
